Dan,

Thanks for your comments. On your opening statement: you have GOT to be kidding. People who DON'T feel there is anything kooky about the Mormon sect aren't really thinking about what they're hearing.

You are right, Mormonism is no stranger than mainstream Christianity. They are equally ridiculous - the only difference is we have a better handle on the historical development of Mormonism (a much more recent religion than Christianity), and can therefore refute it more readily. No one who has bothered to read objective accounts of the history of Mormonism can doubt it is anything other than a baldfaced scam cooked up by a flaky con man.

I think that people who feel there is anything kooky about the Mormon sect don't really understand it. What people find kooky about Mormons is their history. But what makes it any more strange than mainstream Christianity? A man born 2,000 years ago somehow gave everyone access to a blissful afterlife by being nailed to a cross. And then after three days he came back to life and eventually ascended into the sky. Don't you think mainstream Christianity sounds just a bit odd to the objective observer?

Mormon history is strange in and of itself, I agree, but the religion isn't. Believing God has a body instead of being an ever-present spirit isn't strange. Believing God can't be understood sounds strange to me.

Good post, I did enjoy the read. I just think that you should clarify that most of what Mormons believe is no stranger than any other religion. It's how Mormons came to those conclusions that might sound kooky (ie: visions, angels, hidden ancient records, etc.) It does sound kookier than mainstream Christianity, but I have no more trouble believing it than I do any other odd sounding belief of Christianity.
