Joe,

I think your impression (that most atheists are also Libertarians) is incorrect. David and I are a sample of two.

From my experience, the vast majority of atheists are decidedly left-wingers, definitely card-carrying Democrats, liberals, socialists MoveOn.org types...whatever you'd like to call it. I would say my Libertarianism is seen as an oddity, even as a defect to be (barely) overlooked, by most of the local freethought community. I don't quite know why that is, since I see much of socialist thought as replacing the God of heaven with the god of government.

So...in a nutshell, most atheists in America are most definitely liberal Democrats. If that's how you define yourself, I promise you have plenty of company! :)

Thanks,
John

I'm pretty new to the whole atheist/skeptic world of podcasting (mostly listening for the past 8 months or so). My impression, based on these podcasts including your own, is that most atheists and skeptics are Libertarians (American-style versus the anarchist versions at one time more predominant in Europe)!

As someone who is much more on the liberal side of things, I feel as if I'm the exception to the rule and not you folks. Of course, most of the Libertarians I know are men who are usually 50 years or younger. Maybe that's why many atheist podcasters - who tend to be men under 50, are Libertarians? :)
