Do not forget that it was not that long ago when people still believed in fairies, witches, and sea monsters - and would fight or kill anyone who told them they were wrong about their beliefs. I think it’s a very valid comparison. Especially because you, yourself, find the wishbone to be a particularly weak superstition.
