Subatomic Phyzix in the Shizouse!

If you’re reading this, it means the physicists running the new Large Hadron Collider at CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research) haven’t blown up the world or sucked it away inside a miniature black hole.  Yet.

The LHC goes online today, and while some say there actually is a one-jillionth chance that it’ll trigger something disastrous, the vast majority of knowledgeable persons believe that it’ll be a safe (but incredibly expensive) way to reproduce conditions from the very very early universe and hopefully teach us something about the Big Bang and elusive dark matter.

If you, like me, feel like a complete idiot trying to understand this kind of research (much less explain it to somebody else), here’s a helpful rap video cooked up by Kate McAlpine, the “US LHC Communicator” for the project.  The video is a fantastic, scientifically sound primer-in-verse for subatomic morons (and while the tune is catchy, it has that white-folks-doing-rap vibe that sets the cause of rap back to, I dunno, the day before Blondie released “Rapture”).  Enjoy!
