The Rise of the Godless

National Journal Magazine just published an extensive article written by Paul Starobin about the current atheist movement in America.  “The Rise of the Godless” features quotes from various freethinkers in leadership positions around the country, including millionaire Louis J. Appignani.  It’s a good, evenhanded article overall, although the statement “the Godless are emerging as an enthusiastic voice on behalf of scientific efforts to clone human beings” seems overstated at best and misleading at worst.  It’s also ironic to me that, according to Starobin, atheists support euthanasia “under the signature idea that each person is his or her best decision maker”–as the article points out, atheists skew overwhelmingly to the left, a political stance that generally denies, ignores or bypasses this “signature idea.”
