Sotomayor gives RC supermajority in SCOTUS

President Obama has just announced that his pick to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice David Souter is Sonia Sotomayor, who is currently a federal judge on the US Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit.  We’ll learn lots more about her in coming weeks, but at first flush, she seems a pretty good pick, with solid academic and professional credentials.  Plus, goodness knows the Supreme Court could use another female face and/or another ethnic minority (and since Sotomayor is Hispanic, she’ll be making history).

But…the seating of Sotomayor will also mean that six out of nine Supreme Court Justices will be Roman Catholic!  Souter is an Episcopalian; Ruth Bader Ginsberg and Stephen Breyer are Jewish.  The only Protestant left on the Court will be the the 89-year-old John Paul Stevens (who declines to identify himself by a specific denomination).

Now, I’m not one to insist that the Court (or any other government body) has to “look like America,” and I’m not saying that the seating of Sotomayor will be some signal to activate a Roman Catholic sleeper cell within SCOTUS.  But I’m wondering how Christian America would react to the nomination of a non-religious judge.  And imagine how they’d behave if they learned that six out of nine Supreme Court Justices were atheists!!!  Just thinkin’ out loud…
