Freethought Film Festival

Hey, how cool is this?  The Freethought Film Festival Foundation (FFFF) is a newly-launched non-profit organization based in–where else?–Florida (the only state that begins with an “F”).  They’re shooting for November 2010 in Tampa.  If you’re a budding filmmaker, or just a lover of freethought who wants to show some support, check ‘em out at FreethoughtFilmFest.org.

Here’s the FFFF press release:

Newly Incorporated Non-Profit, Freethought Film Festival Foundation, Seeks to Promote Reason through Film

A newly incorporated, non-profit, charitable, educational organization in the State of Florida called the Freethought Film Festival Foundation, strives to promote reason, critical thinking and freedom of inquiry through the medium of film.

The Freethought Film Festival Foundation has launched efforts to host a Freethought Film Festival event in Tampa, Florida in 2010. With support from freethinkers who have viewpoints that are agnostic, atheist, humanist, secular humanist, rationalist, skeptic, of “Bright” mind, nontraditional or generally non-religious; the Freethought Film Festival Foundation can produce a focused means through which freethought ideas can be presented to the public. Such focus and collaboration with individuals and similar organizations on this single project is what will make the event a success. The Freethought Film Festival Foundation aims for the Freethought Film Festival to be an annual event.

Not only is a film festival a focused means through which freethought ideas can be presented to the public, but it also encourages artistic expression–a treasured humanist value. With the popularity of the movie “Religulous”, and the increased visibility in the media of freethinking public figures and ideas, there has never been a better time than now to encourage a freethought genre in film. The Freethought Film Festival Foundation will foster such encouragement.

A unique aspect of the Freethought Film Festival Foundation is that it will be reaching out to young filmmakers to encourage them to use their talent to specifically produce films to promote reason. To accomplish this, the Freethought Film Festival Foundation will establish a scholarship fund to award outstanding filmmakers whose work reflects its mission. A scholarship award will support the educational endeavors of fledgling freethinkers, and encourage them to express a commonly suppressed voice of reason through the art of filmmaking.
