But I like to personalize it. Suppose I could travel back and observe my ancestors: primitive hominid, small tree dwelling mammal, rodent and so on. Eventually, I could reach a hairpin and follow it until it terminates on the border collie sitting at my feet! At some point in history, an animal walked the earth that is the direct ancestor of me and my dog. I think that's great. I also loved the hairpin thought experiment. But I like to personalize it. My "lesson learned" from this? Ancient agriculturalists were a-holes. And I can say this with some authority because they selected for these plants to taste this way - and didn't even have ranch-dressing!
