SCOTUS declines to hear Newdow’s IGWT appeal

It’s not a loss, but it’s not exactly a victory, either.  The Supreme Court has refused to hear Michael Newdow’s appeal after the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the national motto “In God We Trust” is not a violation of the Constitution.  I think the 9th Circuit was flat-out wrong, but I also think it’s better for the Supreme Court to decline the appeal and leave open the (tiny) possibility that a future Court might hear a similar case and rule on the side of church-state separation.  For now, we’ll have to endue the self-congratulatory smugness of fundamentalist conservatives.
