smokerwithrushdieJune 2, 1923 – British atheist and activist Barbara Smoker is born in London. A World War II veteran, Smoker renounced her Roman Catholicism in 1949 and became active in the secular humanist movement. She was president of Britain’s National Secular Society from 1971 to 1996, and chair of the British Voluntary Euthanasia Society (now Dignity in Dying) from 1981 to 1985. She has received widespread recognition from the secular community, including an Honorary Membership in the British Humanist Association and Honorary Vice Presidency of the UK’s Gay and Lesbian Humanist Association.
