August 6, 1983 – By his own account, competitive bicyclist Michael Shermer becomes a skeptic, after trying “a host of weird things,” including acupuncture, chiropractic and pyramid power. After his embrace of scientific skepticism, Shermer went on to become a fixture in the skeptical community, founding the Skeptics Society and Skeptic magazine, writing numerous books and making countless appearance in debates and at conventions.
