August 9, 1977 – First meeting of the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal (CSICOP) Executive Council in New York City. Formed in 1976, CSICOP’s mission was (and is) to “to promote scientific inquiry, critical investigation, and the use of reason in examining controversial and extraordinary claims.” Founding members included Paul Kurtz, Carl Sagan, Isaac Asimov, B. F. Skinner, Phillip J. Klass, Martin Gardiner and Ray Hyman. In 2006, CSICOP changed its name to the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry (CSI).
