October 23, 4004 BC – The Creation of the universe supposedly begins (technically at nightfall the preceding evening) by the Lord God Almighty, as reckoned by Irish Archbishop James Ussher.

October 23, 1903 – American theologian and philosopher Francis Ellingwood Abbot dies in Beverly, Massachusetts, aged 66. He served for a time as a Unitarian minister, but was ultimately dismissed for being insufficiently Christian. He pioneered “scientific theism,” which sought to reconstruct religion using the scientific method. His books include Scientific Theism and The Way Out of Agnosticism.
