December 2 in freethought history…

December 2, 1843 – The final issue is published of The Oracle of Reason, Britain’s first atheist periodical. The publication could not survive financial woes and the prosecution and/or imprisonment of its founders (Charles Southwell, William Chilton and John Field) for blasphemy.
