earthriseDecember 24, 1968 – The Apollo 8 astronauts broadcast live, reading the Creation story from the book of Genesis while orbiting the Moon on Christmas Eve, leading to a lawsuit by atheist activist Madalyn Murray O’Hair. The case was later dismissed by the Supreme Court for lack of jurisdiction. That same day, astronaut William Anders took a picture dubbed “Earthrise,” which would become one of the most celebrated photographs of all time.
