keithellisonJanuary 3, 2007 - Congressman Keith Ellison (MN 5th district) assumes office in 2007, taking the oath of office on a Quran once owned by Thomas Jefferson, and becoming the first Muslim member of the United States House of Representatives.

January 3, 2013 – Congresswoman Kyrsten Sinema (AZ 9th district) assumes office in 2013, becoming the first openly bisexual and second reportedly atheist member (after Pete Stark of California) of the United States House of Representatives. Sinema has been widely described as an atheist, but her spokesman has stated that the Congresswoman “believes the terms ‘nontheist,’ ‘atheist’ or ‘nonbeliever’ are not befitting of her life’s work or personal character,” but that nonetheless she “believes that a secular approach is the best way to achieve this in good government.”
