gwfooteJanuary 11, 1850 – British secularist and journalist George William Foote is born in Plymouth, England. Active in the secular community his entire adult life, Foote was a member (at various times) of numerous organizations, including the National Secular Society and the British Secular Union. He founded two periodicals: the short-lived The Secularist (with George Jacob Holyoake), and The Freethinker, begun in 1881 and still published online today. (For his efforts with The Freethinker, Foote was convicted of blasphemy and sentenced to one year of hard labor.) He died in 1915, aged 65.
