March 8, 1948 – The Supreme Court of the United States rules, in McCullom v Board of Education, that religious instruction in public schools is unconstitutional. The plaintiff–Vashti McCullom, whose son was the student at the center of the case–recounted her experience in a book titled One Woman’s Fight, served as president of the American Humanist Association, and was a signer of both Humanist Manifestos II and III.
